Friday July 15th
Two veteran Miami Dade police officer, Michael King and Antonio Roberts are in federal custody, facing racketeering and drug charges. A former Miami Dade jail guard, Marvin Coney was also arrested. They’ve been the focus of a wiretap for the past couple of years. Authorities say among other things, the officers tipped off a drug ring about police operations.
Two teenaged boys, 13 and 15 years old accused of breaking into a Miami woman’s home, using a stun gun on her and raping her, while her infant slept nearby. Authorities say the teens also ransacked the victim’s home, stole cash and other items. Prosecutors have not decided if the two will be charged as adults.
Effective immediately, Riviera Beach police can start cracking down on people who wear sagging pants, slapping them with a 150 dollar fine or community service. Get caught a second time and the fine is 30 dollars. Repeated offenders could wind up in jail for 60 days. A teenager drubbed a “transit freak”, 18 year old James Harris is in trouble with the law and on the run, accused of stealing, one but two Miami Dade County buses, picking up fares, and even taking time out for a romantic rendevous captured on a security camera. According to police Harris made friends with a couple of county bus drivers and got himself official Miami Dade transit gear: the shirt, the jacket and a hat. Police are trying to find Harris. Transit Director, Harpol Kapoor is promising a thorough investigation.
There is a new trend in fighting foreclosure, homeowners hiring lawyers to duke it out with their lenders. Critics say it only delays the inevitable. Fighting back with legal help does substantially delay the process, adding months, in some cases years.

And finally, family and friends of a beloved high school coach, Willie Lewis, are preparing to lay him to rest. Lewis coached at Hallandale Beach schools for three decades. The viewing is tonight at St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Hollywood. Coach Lewis’ funeral is tomorrow at Mount Sinai United Methodist Church in Dania Beach. Willie Lewis was 76.

This year’s Emmy nominations are JUST out. Raisin in the Sun nominated for best tv movie. Phylicia Rashad also nominated as best actress for her work in that film. The Emmy’s air Sunday, September 21st on ABC. A 2 county police chase overnight started as a domestic dispute in Broward. Police say 27 year old Delvin Lewis led them from Commercial Boulevard, south on 95 to Miami Dade County, then east across the “ONE NINETY FIVE”. It ended on Miami Beach near Mount Sinai hospital. Police say when Lewis got blocked in he opened fire. Lewis has a long arrest record, many felonies. Authorities say this is not the first time he’s been violent with police.
Was the Fort Lauderdale police chief’s wife, Eleanor Adderly shooting to kill when she opened fire on her husband earlier this month? Plantation police are investigating dozens of text messages sent between Adderly and his wife. She is free on bond, charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and shooting into a dwelling. Those charges could be upgraded to attempted murder.
Tomorrow Miami Dade Commissioners will consider leasing more than 100 acres of land at the Opa Locka Airport to the Carrie Meek Foundation. The organization is planning a major commercial real estate development. It would include, among other things, warehouses and restaurants.
Broward voters, do NOT FORGET about tonight’s political forum at the African American Research Library and Cultural Center in Fort Lauderdale. Tonight’s event focuses on county court judges, the Broward Commission and the School Board. It gets started at 6PM.
And finally, a “HOT” countdown, 12 days left to register, IF you plant vote in the upcoming primary. The last day to register to vote is Monday, July 28th.
Wednesday July 16th
Tonight HOT 105’s Rodney Baltimore will moderate a town hall meeting on BLACK INFANT MORTALITY. In Miami Dade County Black babies are twice as likely to die as white babies. The meeting, organized by “The Healthy Start Coalition” is tonight, 7 to 10PM at the African Heritage Cultural Arts Center in Miami.
The Miami Dade School Board’s next meeting is July 30th. The final budget must be approved by mid-September. At last night’s meeting the board did not make a decision on suspending teacher’s raises. They decided not to eliminate the jobs of any Miami Dade School police officers – and put the School Board Attorney, Julie Ann Rico on leave. She’s being investigated for taking $15-thousand dollars in moving expenses and never moving from Palm Beach to Miami Dade.

Students and staff at Pines middle school reacting with shock to the arrest of band teacher, Russell Pittman. Pembroke Pines Sergeant Bryan Davis says Pittman took advantage of a 14 year old girl. He allegedly fondled the girl’s breasts. Police say they have incriminating conversations of Pittman on the phone. He is facing two counts of lewd and lascivious molestation. When school starts next month Pittman will not be working with students. He’s been reassigned.
And finally, Star Jones says she’s still in love with her soon-to-be ex husband, Al Reynolds. Reynolds is teaching at Florida Memorial University. He says right now he’s focusing on teaching, finishing his doctorate – and his financial help book, titled, “Bank on It”.
Tuesday July 15th
We’re learning more about the man found shot to death yesterday in Opa Locka. He was 21 year old Doval Smith. Smith was no stranger to police. He’s an alleged gang member and police suspect he may have been involved in the murder of 17 year old Otissha Burneett two years ago. DOVAL’s Smith’s TWIN brother, DAVAL Smith is in the Miami Dade County jail accused of shooting a police officer in the hand. His trial begins in August.
Right now, activist Norman Brahaman’s trial against the city of Miami and Miami Dade County is about to resume. This is day 2. Brahman is trying to prevent the city and country from using tax payer dollars to fund a so called mega plan that includes a multi-million dollar stadium for the Marlins. Miami Dade County Manager, George Burgess is expected to take the stand today.
At one o’clock this afternoon the Miami Dade School Board will meet. The jobs of as many as 18 school police officers are on the line – potential victims of budget cuts.
The head of the Miami Dade School police, CHIEF Gerald Darling is on his way out of town, reportedly leaving to CREATE a school police force in Memphis.
The Pahokee and Booker T. Washington High school football players involved in bench clearing brawl on Saturday will face disciplinary action – not from the Florida High School Athletic Association though. The association leaves discipline in the summer up to the schools.
Education top of mind for a South Florida minister of music, the talented Reverend Eddie Robinson. He is helping to unite south Florida’s gospel community with a number of workshops and events. The first is a week from Thursday, 7PM at the New Mount Olive Baptist Church.
And congratulations are in order for the Reverend John F. White, now BISHOP White. White is the pastor of Mount Hermon A.M.E. Church in Fort Lauderdale. He will head the AME’s office of Ecumenical and Urban Affairs.
Monday July 14th
It’s been a deadly and dangerous 72 hours in South Florida. Right now police are in Opa Locka looking for answers in the shooting death of 19 year old Deval Smith. A second victim was shot and injured.
One person, 18 year old Freddy Crump killed, five others injured, including one critically yesterday at a block party in Miami’s Brownsville neighborhood. It was a celebration: a graduation party. Crump had had runs in with the law on drug charges, but police aren’t sure if that played a role in his death. If you know anything that might help police, please call Crimestoppers at (305)
You’re also urged to call Crimestoppers if you know anything about a shooting in at a flea market in North Miami Saturday. One man was critically injured as he left the flea market 139th and NW 7th Avenue. Lt. Neal Cuevas says the gunmen were determined, shooting to kill and apparently didn’t care who got in the way. There is other news, encouraging news to report about Florida A & M University. The school is moving forward with a plan to provide students an improved curriculum and make some new hires at the “Developmental Research School”. FAMU is enjoying a turnaround, taken off academic probation last month.
Will students at historically Black colleges and universities be negatively impacted by the sale of Anheuser Busch to Belgian brewer “InBev”? It’s too early to say. Busch has long been a supporter and sponsor of the United Negro College Fund. The beer maker has been an American institution since the 18-hundreds.
